PETALING JAYA: Those who drive through housing areas must exercise extreme care between 5pm and 7pm as this period has been dubbed the “most deadly hours” for children.

Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said in 2008, 1,633 accidents involving children were reported during that time.

“Studies have shown that children are not as attentive as they should be especially when playing by the roadside. They are easily distracted which can create risks for them and drivers. Thus, drivers must exercise care by not speeding,” said Prof Ahmad Farhan.

He was commenting on the case of five-year-old Danial Gabrial Abdullah who was believed to have been flung more than 10m after being hit by a speeding van, that allegedly had the words Polis Bantuan, outside his home in Saujana Puchong on Saturday night.

He has been warded at Serdang Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Prof Ahmad Farhan advised drivers to keep to the speed limit of 30km per hour in residential areas.

Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the incident should serve as a reminder to all parents to not take their children’s safety for granted including in front or at the back of their house.

Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said young children below the age of 10 need very close parental or adult supervision as they are not able to perceive road danger very well.

“In this case, the front gate was not locked at the time of the incident. Parents should not take such risks especially since Danial’s residence is next to a road, even more so at night when visibility is poor,” he said.
